A selection of animated short films featuring stories from other countries created for the National Film Board of Canada (all ages), including:

 

Tzaritza: When a young girl misses her Bulgarian grandmother she hatches a plan to bring her from Bulgaria to Montreal when she finds a tzaritza (magic shell) along the seashore.

Lights for Gita: Eight-year-old Gita, a native of New Delhi living in Canada, can’t wait to celebrate Divali, the Hindu festival of lights, but an ice storm cuts off the power ruining her plans for a celebration. Or does it?

From Far Away: Saoussan, a young girl struggling to adjust to a new life after having been uprooted from her war torn homeland, gets help with her difficult memories in her new home.

A Sea Turtle Story: A moving and exquisite stop-motion animated film that chronicles the life cycle of this critically endangered species and captures the beauty of their ecosystem.

Jamie Lo, Small & Shy: When her father is sent to Hong Kong for a year-long work assignment, Jaime Lo, a shy Chinese-Canadian girl, uses her creativity to cope with his absence.

Christopher Changes His Name: Christopher didn’t like his name any more so he changes it several times. When he has trouble cashing a birthday check, however, he begins to see his name in a new light.

Vistas Little Thunder: Inspired by Mi’kmaq legend The Stone Canoe, this film featuring Aboriginal humor follows Little Thunder as he reluctantly leaves his family and sets out on a trip to become a man.

Roses Sing on New Snow: Maylin cooks mouth-watering meals at her father’s restaurant in Chinatown, but her father and brothers take all the credit. When a dignitary from China visits and tastes one of her dishes, she finally earns the recognition she deserves.

The Sand Castle: In this stop-motion, Oscar-winning film, a sand man sculpts other sand creatures and together they build a castle--only to be interrupted by an uninvited guest.
